Rhode Island Laws

law I live in the tiniest state in the nation: Rhode Island. I’ve been here for the past 16 years and I could blog about the oddities of this state for days. Not only do I make fun of the way people talk here (I’m not a native, so I can do that!) but I’ve recently discovered that there are Rhode Island Laws that are completely insane. I think I’ve even broken some.

So, from the state where people are known to go to out for a “Beah” (beer) and a “Gagga” (a disgusting hot dog with too many toppings) here are some of the laws I’ve discovered. I’m not including the groovy prostitution law that says “prostitution isn’t illegal in Rhode Island as long as it occurs indoors” because I wrote about that previously.

Exercising any labor, business, or work, or using any game, sport, play, or recreation, or causing any of the above to be done to or by your children on the first day of the week (Sunday) results in a penalty of $5 for the first offense and $10 for the second. OK, I’ll just give them Sundays off from now on.

Any marriage where either of the parties is an idiot or lunatic is null and void. Are you kidding me?? I didn’t need to go through the expense of a divorce 7 years ago? I’m calling my attorney for a refund.

One must make a loud noise before passing a car on the left. Um…what type of noise? Should I no longer just use my directional? I guess I’m going to just scream like a mad woman next time I pass someone on the left. I cannot wait!!!

It is illegal to drive down any street with beer in your car, even if it is unopened. Fortunately I don’t drink beer. I’ve never even had one. However, I have purchased it to bring to a gathering or two before. How was I supposed to transport it? Tie it my tail pipe and drag it behind me?

It is illegal to use water on even-numbered days for the sole purpose of watering plants, gardens, or lawns. I can’t even keep track of what day it IS, never mind what day I can water my plants. Come to think of it, I could really have some fun with this. Let’s see, what neighbor is pissing me off on even numbered days and I’m going to go turn on their sprinkler and call in the law.

You may not sell toothpaste and a toothbrush to the same customer on a Sunday.
So, you’re shit out of luck if you drop yours in the toilet on a Sunday and need a new one? I assume the guy who wrote this law had no teeth?

It is illegal to wear transparent clothing.
Oh, yeah! I’m going to test this out and wrap my self in Saran Wrap for Halloween….

Ridiculous, right? But, hey….we have GREAT beaches in the summer and some of the best seafood in the country.

  2. That law seemed to isolate its own citizens, it would be very depressed for foreign citizens residing in the area ..
hmmmmm,,, I think the use of this law is not a good idea. :-)

This is an awesome post, Cherly. How do people in RI bring their drinks home. Too bad you have to walk or either ride a bicycle every time you want booze.

Wow! to the guy from Oregon for posting such beautiful comment. But that dude seriously need help, before someone gets him transfered to a mental hospital.

    • wow such harsh language….you must have anger issues? I have them from time to time–esp when people like you (all I know about you from your IP address 98.246.57.204 is that you spent 1.5 minutes on my blog and you are in Oregon. Perhaps you spent almost 3/4 of that time figuring out how to type that fine one liner in all caps.

You really need to find something better to do out there in Oregon! Maybe clean your mouth out with soap? :)

      • I'd recommend good old fashioned pine tar soap. Lots of pine up there in much of Oregon, on the western slopes, at least. Some toward the east and out onto the lava beds, but not as much… where was I going? Oh, yes. Here's to your patience and ability to keep a grin on your chin.

RI also has the smallest airport. No wonder I can never get a direct flight from the UK.

Massachusetts has its fair share of strange laws as well…my favorite….its legal for a citizen of Massachusetts to shoot a Rhode Islander found in the Commonwealth after dark….

  9. It may be the smallest state in area, but it has the longest NAME of any state, and yet I never see you use the complete name.

    • I sent you an email. I do know that it's Rhode Island and Providence Plantations. WHO in their right mind says that? They are looking to change it for multiple reasons but that's not what the post was about. It's humor. Why bust my ass? So nuts.

Are you just here to give me a hard time? I'll give it right back…………
