Social Media: Everyone is an Expert!
Lately I’ve been reading through people’s Twitter profiles and it seems to me there are a lot of new careers out there in social media. Then I looked at my profile. It says I’m a “commentator on bull crap”. That’s a career, right? I thought so.There are an awful lot of experts on Twitter. Everyone seems to be an expert in social media. If I could figure it all out, I’d trade in my job as commentator on bull crap to proudly wear that Social Media Expert badge. Wait. Isn’t that the same thing?
What qualifications does one have to have to become a social media expert? Better yet, a social media consultant? Then there’s the social media coach. Expert. Consultant. Guru. Evangelist. I’m dizzy.
WHY is the unemployment rate so high? WHY aren’t these jobless people becoming experts in social media? Let me try to figure out the qualifications for the following positions and maybe I’ll become a Social Media Recruiter:
Social Media Expert – get lots of Facebook or Twitter friends and you’re an expert!
Social Media Consultant – recommends sites to socialize on. Instant consultant!
Social Media Coach – same thing as a consultant but you just yell louder.
Social Media Evangelist – a coach with a higher power
Social Media Master – I think the master level has something to do with how many Pokemon you get.
Ahem…master? MASTER? Are we back living in the days of I Dream of Jeannie? What happened to the world full of doctors, lawyers and teachers? Now we’re all masters and consultants. Oh, and getting rich with our wealth advisors. What a world.
Now don’t get your panties in a bunch if you’re one of the aforementioned specialists. I’m just having fun. After all, I just write a blog…but wait, that makes me a Blog Specialist. Do you want me to set your blog up for you? Just call me a Blog Consultant. Do you need some hints on what to write? I’d be happy to be your Blog Coach. Do you want me to tell you how much I love your blog? By golly, I’m a flipping Blog Cheerleader.

Very funny! Made me glad that none of the above is on either of my profiles!
no….you are not a blog cheerleader….you are a blog cheerleader extraordinaire…
Ah HAH – you've just hit on why I squeezed Social Media Enthusiast into my Twitter profile! I have a lot of fun at it without having to claim mastery or expertise or any such knowledge base. And I meet the nicest people this way (who aren't following me hoping I will guide them to the Promised Land of Social Media Perfection).
I went through my own Twitter follower list recently and deleted most of those people. All they do all day long is send you link after link on how to get more Twitter followers or how to do this or that. After awhile, it gets to be nothing but Twitter noise. I can never see the tweets I want to see for the ones I don't. I make it a rule now if the Social Media [fill in blank] has said very little personally or interesting on Twitter, I don't reciprocate the following. Chances are, the person will just unfollow me five minutes after I follow him anyway.
Great article Cheryl and my sentiments entirely. Although do my thoughts or comments count as I am not an expert
Wait a minute, you mean all these people I'm following are not what they say they are? You don't mean @santaclaus too right? For gosh sakes, HES VERIFIED!!
I'm just losing all my childhood misconceptions when I read your blog.
BTW, I like to think of myself as the term I hate the most. I'm a social media "influencer" (a dubious title at best)
I know what you mean! Seems like everybody is an Social Media Expert in some form or fashion. It's getting rather boring in my opinion. I sent you a DM on Twitter about Social Media "experts" a minute ago, and I bet you'll enjoy it. I thought about putting the links here in your comments for others to see as well, but I didn't want cha to think I'm spamming ya. Don't cha hate that?!
I thought maybe I was really missing something about all these Social Media folks. But now I know I'm not! Thanks for setting my mind at ease. I don't have to agonize about why I'm not an expert now!
We were just talking about the same thing here in our office. So many people also claim to be SEO and PPC experts. We’ve tried outsourcing so many things only to discover that we know more than the people who we hired to help us!
I have a feeling that the same people who are now social media gurus were once totally into all that Six Sigma BS. Surely the move from “black belt” to “master” is a lateral one.
I suggest to learn that kind of business regarding that matter we had to understand fully or have a social media consultants so we can identified what really means of that.
What a fun post!
Very true, shh.. me too was a twitter evangelist, but then I used to pull in people to twitter.
Later on, when I realized people hate that, I called myself a Social Media Lover, anyone can love the social media.. Any probs there? .. lol
I always liked your style, right on the face. I bet when you were in college, you gave a hard time to be boys who would pass comments. was it so ? (LMAO)
Yes you are right I was just talking to my husband about this tonight how all of the sudden everyone is a social media consultant! I actually do this, social…whatever you want to call it…, just for 5-6 companies on the side, got my name just from word of mouth. But there is no way I am adding it to my profile…it is already overplayed IMO!

You know what they say, “If you can’t dazzle them with brilliance, baffle them with bullshit!”
You are a ninja master of social media
I need to get my ninja costume…
I've always thought of you as more of a kill bill sports yellow jumpsuit girl with Katana.
This is why I signed up for your teleconference tomorrow. I dont’ get it all. What am I? Who are you? How did we get to be different? Bite me, I don’t care?
