Ass Hat of the Week Award: John Edwards

April 30, 2009

ass_hat4It’s nice to be home. Well, I haven’t been away, but I’ve been doing some guest blogging this week and that was so much fun. However, it’s always nice to be back in your own place after a vacation, isn’t it?

What better way to kick off my homecoming than to start my weekly Ass Hat of the Week Award? Each Friday I will post about a person or maybe even a product that ticks me off.

This week I had a few people in mind, but when I did my research, one person clearly stood out for many reasons.

John Edwards, you are so deserving of the Ass Hat of the Week Award.

I am not singling John Edwards out because he had an affair. These days, no one is shocked when a public figure is caught up in a scandal and Edwards’ affair with Rielle Hunter is not “new” news. However, I just read a few excerpts on-line from his wife Elizabeth’s forthcoming book, Resilience, and it disturbed me.

Elizabeth, who has terminal cancer, may not be the perfect wife. I cannot judge from afar about the state of their marriage when John Edwards strayed. However, when he claimed that he had the affair while his wife was in remission, I almost threw up. Did that make his actions more acceptable because he waited to do the horizontal mambo with another woman until his wife had a break in the cancer action? Total ass hat…and thensome.

John Edwards wanted to represent our country. He campaigned with his wife by his side, smiling his phony ‘All American’ smile the entire time. She bit her tongue and supported her husband because…well, because that’s what you do when you’re married.

When Edwards ended his Presidential campaign in 2008, he issued a statement that did not reflect his moral misjudgements.

I began my presidential campaign here to remind the country that we, as citizens and as a government, have a moral responsibility to each other, and what we do together matters. We must do better, if we want to live up to the great promise of this country that we all love so much.  - John Edwards’ remarks in New Orleans, 1/30/2008

If he was blatantly unfaithul to his wife, how would he have cared for our country? His remarks, above, are so smug. He used the words “moral responsiblity to each other” and “what we do together matters” without regard for the way he was morally irresponsible to his family. In my eyes, if your morals suck when it comes to your family life, how can you possibly lead a country? Good thing he figured this out and withdrew from the race.

John Edwards, you are so deserving of this week’s Ass Hat Award. Keep your pants on and take care of your family.

  1. [...] April of last year I gave John Edwards an AssHat of the Week award. Just the fact that he was just such a pompous jackass when it came to his affair with Rielle [...]

Steve, I can’t agree more. The suggestion to put him on trial with the Komen Foundation as trial authority is first rate.

I will also consider AH of the Month, Quarter, etc. In time, my blog may turn into The Daily AssHat. ;)

As you said, so many Ass Hat nominees, so little time. Maybe you should consider an Ass Hat of the Month, Quarter, Year, Decade, Century so you can recognize more of them. You have almost a whole year’s worth just mentioned in this one post. Well, just wanted to endorse your recognition of John Edwards myself. In fact, I think he should be put on public trial for his shameful disrespect to his wife and to women in general. And I would like to nominate the Susan G. Komen Foundation as the trial authority.

    Indeed! Excellent choice!

  5. Suburbia Steph on May 1, 2009 at 7:42 pm

Perfect! He IS a total ass hat!

  6. Mary @ Holy Mackerel on May 1, 2009 at 5:42 pm

Even though I’m Canadian, I think you hit the nail right on the head with this one! Good call!

  7. Zippy on May 1, 2009 at 5:30 pm

I’m with you….throw him into the Providence river and let him swim home – he stinks anyway!

  8. The Daily Blonde on May 1, 2009 at 4:44 pm

@theMother….that was VP Joe Biden who said that. But they are both muttering idiots. I would have loved to put Joe Biden in the Ass Hat…so many asses, so little time.

Isn’t he the guy who told people to stay out of airplanes due to the flu?

Politicians should have to get a note from their epidemiologists before they’re allowed to speak in public.

Jenn–I won’t he’s on the short list for an upcoming post. I need to research him a bit more. It was about 1am when I wrote this (fell asleep twice during the process) and I wasn’t alert enough to dig into the story of yet another ass hat. He’ll have his day…I’m reading rumors that they want him back in his “old job” if you know what I mean… idiots!!!

  11. Jenn and the Citiy on May 1, 2009 at 1:35 pm

Fine, he deserved it too. You are right. And I’ll buy her book too. But don’t forget my nominee….

  12. Bahiyah S. on May 1, 2009 at 12:53 pm

Well, he has my vote…for the Ass Hat of the week.

  13. Tom on May 1, 2009 at 8:55 am

Nice to have you back in your usual place….and I think the Ass Hat fits John “the Ambulance Chaser” Edwards well.

  14. The Daily Blonde on May 1, 2009 at 8:12 am

It is truly a different world with these celebs and political people…but it teaches such shitty lessons to our children. Blah!

  15. Rosy on May 1, 2009 at 7:12 am

Political peeps live a different life, almost like celebrities and will always do what is necessary to stay in the spotlight. Look at the Clintons-the man cheated over and over and she stays.

  16. Radio Nowhere on May 1, 2009 at 7:10 am

Shouldn’t John Edwards be awarded a Meta Ass Hat award?

This week, I would have nominated Rep. Virginia Foxx

  17. The Daily Blonde on May 1, 2009 at 6:32 am

This post is about something that is “old news” in many people’s eyes. In addition, it’s not surprising that it’s about a politician. The bumbling fools that try to lead the people of our country.

I’ve always thought that a candidates personal life is just that…and separate from their “jobs”. I began to change my mind when I realized that the values practiced at home are going to reflect on the values you have in office. We can’t control these political piggies, but we can call them out.

I wish Elizabeth well. I will be buying her book when it comes out on May 12th.

  18. Sean Platt on May 1, 2009 at 6:24 am

Asshat indeed. Awesome series, awesome start.

  19. Nancy on May 1, 2009 at 6:06 am

Anyone who would choose pushing his own career over helping his wife fight cancer is totally selfish.

I always felt that he thought he would get the sympathy vote due to his wife’s cancer.

  20. Marvin D Wilson on May 1, 2009 at 5:21 am

Well whaddaya expect from a politician. Sheesh. Hey LOVE your Ass Hat Award feature idea. Pretty cool. :D

  21. Sarah (Real Life) on May 1, 2009 at 5:12 am

I wholeheartedly agree! Many of us who live in his home state, where he lives in his ginormous mansion while completely ignoring the trailer park across the street, have known this for years.

  22. Tom Simpson on May 1, 2009 at 12:46 am

Amen, sister. Politics as usual makes me sick. The moral standards of the common man (gender neutral) should be the same for those in the Offices that serve that common man. If that were the case we would have forced mass exodus of many of our Public Servants and a lot more people wearing Ass Hats. There should be a consistent set of Rules. Is that too much to ask for?
